Entry requirements

The grades of membership and entry requirements were revised at the end of 2002 to separate membership requirements and Engineering Council registration requirements. The revisions were also designed to rationalise the entry procedures whilst providing a structured and natural progression through the grades from Student or Practitioner to Member. The Grade of Fellow is still reserved for those who have had long experience of high calibre and have achieved a position of high responsibility.

Included is entry through specific NDT qualifications – PCN, CSWIP, ASNT, ASNT-TC-1A, British Gas, NAS 410, etc. Individuals holding these are accepted into membership providing they meet the relevant training and experience requirements, and they may progress to higher grades as they acquire higher levels of certification.

Members in the Practitioner, Graduate, Member and Fellow grades, together with Licensed Engineering Practitioners, may use post-nominal letters; these are detailed below.

Grades and the entry requirements are summarised below. For convenience, the PCN certification system has been used, but equivalents under other systems are also accepted by the MQ&E Committee.

STUDENT
Entry is open to anyone who is:
  • a bona fide student of science, engineering, metallurgy or other NDT-related subjects, or
  • trainees or assistants engaged in NDT.

PRACTITIONER - PInstNDT

Entry is by one of two routes:

NDT Certification Route requires
  • possession of a PCN Level 1 qualification, or equivalent.
  • a minimum of 2 years combined approved training and experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or related technologies.
Standard Route requires
  • possession of an academic qualification approved by Council at a standard not lower than that exemplified by a City & Guilds Part II Craft Certificate in an approved subject.
  • a minimum of 2 years combined approved training and experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or allied technologies.

GRADUATE PRACTITIONER MEMBER - GInstNDT

Entry is by one of two routes:

NDT Certification Route requires
  • possession of a PCN Level 2 qualification, or equivalent.
  • a minimum of 3 years combined approved training and experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or allied technologies.
Standard Route requires
  • possession of one or more of the academic qualifications approved by Council, for example BTEC/SCOTVEC Ordinary Certificate or equivalent in an approved subject.
  • a minimum of 3 years combined approved training and experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or allied technologies.
  • general familiarity with all commonly used NDT methods, or demonstration of a high degree of competency in any one specific NDT technique or method, or in his/her particular specialisation.

ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN GRADUATE PRACTITIONER MEMBER Eng Tech GInstNDT

Registration Route requires
  • possession of one or more of the academic qualifications approved by the Engineering Council (UK), for example BTEC/SCOTVEC Ordinary Certificate or equivalent in an approved subject.
  • a minimum of 3 years combined approved training and experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or allied technologies.
  • general familiarity with all commonly used NDT methods, or demonstration of a high degree of competency in any one specific NDT technique or method, or in his/her particular specialisation.
Candidates without the preferred academic qualifications may be able to apply for a B Route appraisal. This separate procedure, administered by BINDT, involves an in depth appraisal of the knowledge and experience acquired. Experienced, practicing professional Engineering Technicians are often found to have gained the necessary knowledge of skills for their job through working closely with other skilled colleagues over a number of years.

LICENSED ENGINEERING PRACTITIONER
All Graduate Grades may also be registered as Licensed Engineering Practitioners providing that they carry current PCN Certification at Levels 2 or 3. This registration allows the use of the post-nominal letters LEP and would result in the following post-nominals for each of the Graduate Grades:
GInstNDT LEP
Eng Tech GInstNDT LEP

MEMBER - MInstNDT
Entry is by one of three routes:

NDT Certification Route requires
  • possession of a PCN Level 3 qualification, or equivalent.
  • a minimum of 5 years combined approved training and experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or related technologies.
  • at least 2 years in position(s) of approved responsibility.
  • general familiarity with all commonly used NDT methods, or demonstration of a high degree of competency in any one specific NDT technique or method, or in his/her particular specialisation.
Standard Route requires
  • possession of one or more academic requirements approved by Council , for example BTEC/SCOTVEC Higher Certificate or equivalent in an approved subject.
  • a minimum of 5 years experience in NDT, condition monitoring, or allied technology of which at least 2 years shall have been devoted to approved training.
  • at least 2 years in position(s) of approved responsibility.
  • demonstrate a high degree of competency in any one specific NDT technique or method, or in his/her particular specialisation.
Technical Report Route – see text below

Senior Engineer Route
Applicants who do not have exemplifying qualifications to demonstrate the required knowledge and understanding may do so in other ways via the Individual Route, but must clearly demonstrate they have achieved the same level of knowledge and understanding as those with qualifications.
These ways include:
  • Writing a Technical Report based on experience and knowledge.
  • Taking Engineering Council Examinations.
  • Following an assessed work-based learning programme.

LICENSED ENGINEERING PRACTITIONER
All Fellow and Member Grades may also be registered as Licensed Engineering Practitioners providing that they carry current PCN Certification at Levels 2 or 3. This registration allows the use of the post-nominal letters LEP and would result in the following post-nominals for each of the relevant Grades:

AFFILIATE

A non-corporate grade for those with an interest in NDT who do not have the necessary qualifications to achieve one of the corporate grades. The only entry requirement is to demonstrate an interest in the science or practice of NDT, condition monitoring or any of the related technologies.
